What’s On Your Desktop?

Sebastian asked, so here’s what is on the machine at home. From Edward Gorey’s Gashleycrumb Tinies.

Hey U.N.?

F*&% right off.

From a Sept. 19 press conference by U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:

Freedom of expression should be and must be guaranteed and protected, when they are used for common justice, common purpose. When some people use this freedom of expression to provoke or humiliate some others’ values and beliefs, then this cannot be protected in such a way. So, my position is that freedom of expression, while it is a fundamental right and privilege, should not be abused by such people, by such a disgraceful and shameful act.

Good luck making that fly here, my friend.

You Can’t Make Up Irony Like This

Anti-intellectual-property advocate and Piratenpartei Deutschland executive committee member Julia Schramm lands a  €100,000 book deal. Someone who agrees that “information wants to be free!” uploads a .pdf copy to a file-sharing server and spreads the link around. Schramm issues DMCA takedown notice.

It really doesn’t get any funnier than that, people. Capitalism FTW!

H/T to Marko.

A College Committee Meeting

that didn’t run long, did useful things during the first meeting of the semester, doesn’t seem to have any annoying personalities and generated a side project for me that should generate some good will with another department.

I’m waiting for an asteroid to crash on my Jeep any second now.

Erin Reviews the Kel-Tec PMR-30

A nice summary of the gun by Erin.

I personally think it’ a solution looking for a non-existent problem, but hey – if you like the concept buy one!

Stupid Is

…well, I was going to say “as stupid does” but in this case it turns out stupid is just stupid.

‘Mass shootings’ cited as reason for Flemington to buy assault rifles

In Flemington, NJ – a state that never met a gun control law it didn’t like. So, what are they buying? Here’s a hint – it’s not ‘assault rifles’.

That’s right; it’s the H&K UMP40 submachine gun. Something *I* trust the average beat cop with, sure you betcha…

As Tam puts it “I can hardly wait to see some half-trained Joisey Barney Fife cutting loose with a UMP-40 set to “group therapy” in a room packed with small-town politicians. It’ll make the recent NYPD Fifth Avenue Fiasco look like a Saturday night sorority squirt gun fight.”

“Councilman Phil Velella said ‘A lot of these criminals who carry out this type of activity have this type of weapons, and if we don’t get them for our police officers, they will be at a disadvantage. We’re just bringing you up to par…’”

No. No, they don’t.

Stupid.

Space Really Is Awesome

We are now regularly shooting video of the sun and we have a way cool recreational vehicle on Mars. Where’s my flying car!

Mathematics=Post-Modernism?

This made me laugh. I’m not sure what that says about me.

Mathematics as Post-Modern (in a Particular and Actually Quite Helpful Way)
