Sparring

After perusing an interesting thread on whether or not one can learn from an instructor who doesn’t believe in sparring (or freeplay, or bouting, or whatever you call it), I feel it is necessary to link to some materials on aliveness in martial arts from Matt Thorton of SBGi.

Tons more can be found using a simple Google search for aliveness martial arts.

Let me also add, while I agree with Thornton’s principles I also feel that for weapons training, much more time needs to be spent learning fundamentals before sparring can take place. It is still necessary, but usually can’t be worked into the curriculum nearly as soon.
